Witnessing patients to shine

One patient with ASD had used to struggle with schooling due to his social impairment; but after graduation, he turned his intense passion for making eco-friendly soap into a small business. Another patient, who had long-standing emotional regulation problems, overcame her interpersonal challenges with our guidance and became a renowned fan-art creator with a strong following. As I accompany my patients on their journeys, I am most grateful to witness them overcoming their difficulties and turning their strengths into success in life.

Protecting the dreams and future of patients

As an IBD clinician, witnessing patients reclaim their lives from the depths of illness is beyond extraordinary. I once treated a young patient with Crohn's disease whose condition deteriorated suddenly when she had just started her doctoral degree. She required surgery and multiple advanced therapies. It was heartbreaking to see her struggle through such pain and fatigue. Her disease was eventually stabilised through persistent management and personalised care. Seeing her graduate and embark on a post-doctoral journey reminds me that medicine is not just about controlling a disease, but protecting the dreams and future of young individuals.

Listening and understanding patient with the heart

I once cared for a 75-year-old lady who lived alone. Upon admission for a hip fracture, she was not only in excruciating pain, but also consumed by helplessness over the surgery and the uncertain recovery. I explained the peri-operative process to her and visited her daily to listen to her concerns and accompany her through the solitude of hospitalisation. Eventually, she regained the confidence to receive treatment and was successfully discharged. That sense of fulfilment is what fuels my passion for work every day.
